Tigers gearing up to defending!

Oct. 6, 2008

The hockey world is well-known for its unconditional and immediate response to tragic events when one of our own has fallen. This past July, former SMU d-man, ROB GUINN, died tragically in a car accident in Jefferson Iowa leaving behind a 5 month old daughter Olivia and his wife Brooke. In the wake of this tragedy, an EDUCATION FUND was established for baby Olivia.

Shawn Redmond, a SMU hockey alumnus who played one year with 'Guinner' immediately recognized the Molson Old Star tournament weekend was an outstanding opportunity for AUS hockey players to show their support. Plans were quickly set in place for a special fundraising raffle and Redmond, Marketing VP at TSN set out to collect sizeable raffle draw prizes, including a Team Canada jersey from the recent Mens Worlds Hockey Championship, a NIke-TSN golfer gift pack. The Huskies Old Stars themselves took charge of selling raffle tickets all throughout the weekend and the response was immediate and generous. Almost $1600 was raised via the Raffle. In addtion, Shawn also secured a signed Sidney Crosby jersey which was placed in the Silent Auction with all proceeds from the sale of the jersey also going to the Olivia Guinn Education Fund. Thanks goes out to Daren Tracey, the successful bidder of this 'keeper' jersey.

In total, $2600 was raised, a truly spectacular demonstration of the caring and supportive nature that defines hockey players everywhere.

As a result, all Molson/AUS Old Star  players deserve to walk a little taller and hold their heads a little higher. You have the gratitude and respect of Brooke Guinn (Rob's wife) and some day, his (now) 9 month old daughter Olivia.
